First Bus announces changes to fares for children and young people

  • New fares come into effect on Sunday 30 July

First Bus has announced changes to fares for children and young people in York from Sunday 30 July.

These are the first changes to fares for children and young people to be introduced in over three years and follow a period of more than 12 months when inflation has continued to remain high.

Under-18 Single fares start from £1.40 (on bus) and increase to £1.50 for children and £1.75 for 16-18 year-olds, respectively.

A ticket for unlimited travel in a day will be £2.50 for children and £3.75 for young people aged 16-18. A weekly ticket will be £8.75 for children and £15 for 16-18 year-olds.

Kayleigh Ingham, Commercial Director of First Bus for North and West Yorkshire, said: “It is more than three years since we last altered the fares for our younger customers.

“We have managed to hold the same prices for a very long period but our business is not immune from the impact of inflation and rising business costs.”

She added: “We have carefully assessed how we can limit price increases for customers within the current economic environment. For example, the increases to Single fares remain below the overall impact of inflation since 2019 and the average cost per trip of making multiple journeys remains low.

Posters will begin appearing on buses this week and further details about the fare changes can be found by visiting the First Bus website: Fare changes from 30th July | First Bus.
